A group of architects based in Warsaw have designed and are planning to build what they claim to be the world’s thinnest house.

The property is called the Ermitaz and will be dedicated to Israeli writer Etgar Keret. It is to be built in the Polish capital by design firm Centrala in a narrow passageway between two existing buildings.

At its widest point the house will measure just 52 inches (132.08cm) as it nestles in the gap between two buildings on 22 Chlodna Street and 74 Zelazna Steet – and at its narrowest point the house will measure just 28 inches (71.12cm) wide.

According to Yahoo! News, the Ermitaz doesn’t meet Polish building codes so is instead being created as an art installation.

“Ermitaz will be a workplace, a hermitage created for an outstanding Isreali writer, Etgar Keret,” said Centrala.

“Besides, it will also fulfil a function of a studio for invited guests – young creators and intellectualists from all over the world. The residential program, conducted in the heart of Wola [a district in western Warsaw], is supposed to produce creative work conditions and become a significant platform for world intellectual exchange.”

The property will be built in a “tri-dimensional steel frame finished with plywood, insulated sandwich panels and styrofoam covered with concrete cloth painted white”.

The interior of the one-bedroom property, which will rely on boat-style plumbing technology, will also be painted white, and access will be via remote-control steps that will descend to ground level.
