The year 2026 will see the arrival of a major world-class development in South America which, as Anthony Hill explains, could provide an idyllic overseas retreat for wine-loving Brits. Plans have been unveiled for a $300 million (£190 million) leisure and residential development in Argentina’s most prestigious wine-growing region. Spread across an area twice the size of Hyde Park, Valle de Uco: Golf, Wine & Country will sit beneath the spectacular Andean peaks of Mendoza. The site will feature 19 different experience zones, offering panoramic views of mountains and lakes, a winery showcasing the region’s finest tipples, private villas, a five-star luxury hotel, sporting facilities and a nature reserve. Just a 90-minute flight from Buenos Aires and a one-hour drive south of Argentina’s wine capital, Mendoza City, Valle de Uco will be the area’s first resort of this kind. Foreign tourism to the Mendoza region has been growing by ten per cent annually thanks to the area’s dramatic beauty, world-class wineries and 300 days of sun each year. Since 2000, more than $1.5 billion (£961 million) has been invested into the region’s industry by some of the biggest names in wine. The region has been voted one of the eight ‘Great Wine Capitals of the World‘ alongside Bordeaux, Napa Valley and Rioja, and its wines regularly receive the highest recommendations from the world’s leading wine critics. These accolades will surely make it a top destination for Brits who enjoy a good drink. But the planners at Valle de Uco have plenty more up their sleeves. In addition to its Vineyard Lodge Hotel, winery and restaurants, the development will also boast top-notch equestrian, polo, fly-fishing and lawn tennis facilities – not to mention an 18-hole championship golf course. In Argentina, the popularity of golf has doubled in the past decade, thanks to its ideal weather conditions, varied terrain and breathtaking scenery. Owning your own piece of Valle de Uco On top of everything described above, Valle de Uco will offer a fantastic outlet for Brits with retirement money burning a hole in their pocket. A total of five unique property designs have been commissioned from British architect Tom Bartlett, whose signature style will see a modernist ethos make the most of the abundant local materials. The names of these luxurious investment properties are Vineyard Villas, Small Orchard Houses, Large Orchard Houses, Lakeside Villas and Lake Houses. Ranging from 110sq m with two bedrooms, to 520sq m with up to seven, each property will be fitted with solar-powered heating and natural ventilation. Prices start from $350,000 (£222,600).
