Most of us want to own a bigger and better home, but moving up the property ladder isn’t always an option.

If not then don’t worry, there are ways to maximise the space that you already have.

These ten tips and tricks from Abacus Estates will help you give your home that roomy feel.

1) Light colours such as whites, creams and pale blues are the best colour combinations to open up a tiny room into a bigger living area. It is all about illusion and light colours that make a small space look bigger.

2) Use multi-function furniture to avoid clutter like a chest that can be used as a coffee table, sofa beds and beds with storage underneath.

3) Furniture such as glass tables can work to give the illusion of more space.

4) Have a clear out and be tidy! Do not hoard, it will make you realise how much of your things you really don’t need.

5) Make the most of open light from your windows; it’s surprising how much light can really open a room up.

6) Mirrors act as an illusion for opening up space. Place large mirrors on walls and use them as a focal point in the room. Try to also use mirrors near windows so it reflects the outdoors.

7) Coordinate the colour of your furniture with the walls; contrasting colours can create breaks in space.

8) Carpet in small rooms makes them look cosier and therefore smaller, laminate or wooden floors are very effective at creating space.

9) CD racks and bookshelves can also be unnecessary clutter, avoid this and try putting up a few floating shelves.

10) Do not hang too many large photos or paintings on the wall.
